Written in Water
Conceived and choreographed by the Co-Artistic Directors of the Ragamala Dance Company, Ranee and Aparna Ramaswamy, Written in Water is an exploration of the Indian board game Paramapadam and the 12th century Sufi poem The Conference of the Birds.
Classical south Indian dance meets digital projection with an exploration of the game Snakes and Ladders. Woven throughout the choreography are large-scale projections of original paintings by Chennai-based visual artist Keshav and Minneapolis artist Nathan Christopher. Composer Amir ElSaffar leads a musical ensemble with a distinct alchemy of Iraqi, jazz, and Carnatic instruments.
Co-commissioned by The Arts Center.
The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi strives to be a beacon on the international arts landscape, firmly rooted in the region but with a global reach, embedded in the university and welcoming the local community to productions of music, theatre, dance, film, poetry and interdisciplinary performances that defy definition.
