A Celebration of the Human Spirit
Majlis Gallery presents an exhibition of hot cast bronze sculpture by Karel Zijlstra. Since his childhood, Zijlstra has been intrigued by past inhabitants of this world. Over hundreds of thousands of years men and women developed from bestial creatures into spiritual human beings. Lack of specific knowledge made them believe in gods and miracles; life was explained and made bearable by storytelling. Zijlstra’s figures have a grace and presence that reminds us, in these days of instant communication, that our ancestors lived closer to the forces of the natural world and understood its complexities probably better than we do today. Zijlstra’s bronzes are modelled in wax and then cast in bronze using the lost wax method.
The gallery’s vision is twofold: to bring international artists to Dubai, supporting their exploration and interpretation of the Middle East into visual forms and to represent locally based artists. There is also an ever changing collection of three dimensional objects displayed alongside fine art, sculpture and artifacts in the five main rooms of the house. A Majlis is defined as a meeting place or common ground.
