Saqqakhaneh is an exhibition of a rare collection of works by Modern Iranian masters.
Credited with the establishment of a modernist approach to a national artistic identity, the Saqqakhaneh movement was formed in the early 1960s. Realising an affinity between aspects of indigenous pre-Islamic and Islamic forms and modern Western art movements, this group of artists was able to reinterpret traditional modes such as calligraphy, miniature painting, textiles and architectural elements, resulting in innovative artwork that embodied a uniquely Iranian character.
