How has the Sunny Side of Life collection influenced your new commission?
The inspiration behind my art installation, Summer Muse is the Life is a Party from Maison Piaget’s Sunny Side of Life high jewellery collection. I imagined the charismatic personality of an elegant woman, dressed in a beautiful gown and embellished in jewels, radiating with confidence at a poolside party on a summer evening. Summer Muse embodies the glamourous lifestyle of the Piaget woman and the inspiring, radiant aura she has around her. The installation’s shape, colour and texture also reflect Piaget’s unique savoir-faire.
Has it been an interesting experience working alongside a jewellery brand?
I had the pleasure to work alongside Maison Piaget. I gained insight into the design principles behind such a global jewellery brand. I was also fascinated to discover just how much know-how and passion goes into each high jewellery piece. High jewellery is an art in its own right.
Working with Maison Piaget has enlightened my thought process and approach to designing so I can explore the breadth of my creativity when working for different clients and diverse projects. As an interior designer, I was able to create an installation that bridges art and interior design. The experience was truly a turning point for me.
What can aspiring designers and artists get out of experiencing your installation this Art Week?
Summer Muse is an interactive art installation that is designed as a seat that a person can lounge on and gently twirl left and right. This subtle motion is inspired by the natural movement of feathers, leaves and water. On the seat, light is captured through a textured magnifying lens, which gets reflected off the brass frame to cast a scattered array of light, embracing the seated person. As the person moves left and right, shimmering shadows form and light plays around them. By interacting with the piece, the person can experience what it is like to be a Piaget woman – strong, unique and confident.
I hope that by experiencing this installation, aspiring artists and designers are inspired to challenge themselves not only creatively but also personally to persevere in their efforts, broaden their horizons and pursue their passion. Through Summer Muse, I would like to send an affirmation that opportunities are out there for them to seize.
In the UAE’s thriving art scene, we are fortunate to have organisations like The Cultural Office of Her Highness Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum that provide emerging and established UAE-based artists and designers with a platform that supports, recognises and nurtures talents.
