Director, Art Dubai
It’s a year of anniversaries, 10 years of AGAP, 5 years of Art Dubai Modern. Do you feel, with Art Dubai in its 12th edition, there is a new level of maturity to the fair?
Very much so and I attribute that to multiple factors, primarily the team. Art Dubai is backed by an army of cultural enthusiasts who work year-round to make sure this is an unmissable, one-of-a-kind fair that presents the very best there is from all over the world with a particular emphasis on that from the MENASA. That is no mean feat.
We also owe a great big thanks to our supporters – these include our gallerists and partners who believe in this fair as much as we do. And last but not least, the UAE which proves time and again that it is indeed the region’s cultural hub and a global player.
What are the unmissable highlights of Art Week 2018 for you?
All bias aside, Art Dubai is priority simply because it occurs for a specific duration, while other fantastic exhibitions such as those in Al Quoz, the Sharjah Art Foundation, Barjeel Art Foundation, the Louvre Abu Dhabi, Warehouse421 and elsewhere are presented over longer periods of time, so one can still catch them. I understand all too well the impossibility of seeing/attending everything at Art Dubai so I would just a pace of one’s schedule – if you can’t have it all, grab whatever you can! So, make sure to ration your rounds at our three halls – Modern, Contemporary and our new Residents section; pick out some talks to attend at the Global Art Forum and the Modern Symposium; definitely visit the Abraaj Group Art Prize and have a look at The Room that is being taken over by GCC. And once you’re done with that, do the grand tour once more because twice is double the treat. The third time is of course a charm!
How important is it to understand the back story of artists lives and how can that be learnt through a visit to Art Dubai?
I believe back stories are fundamental and as with any great story, it starts with a little imagination and a question. Learning about an artist’s life and practice can most definitely happen at Art Dubai – either by asking the artist her/himself, the gallerist, curator or collector – all of these individuals will be present and can offer a 360-degree look and survey into an artist’s life.
