Why are residency programmes important components of an artists’ career?
One gets introduced to a different city, not just as a traveller but as someone who can be stationed to reciprocate to the city. Residencies provide a platform for artists to meet the experts, to experiment, explore and contextualise their existing practice, giving them a chance to step away from their comfort zones.
What are your initial impressions of the arts scene in the UAE?
As the UAE itself is structured by workforce from across the world, I think the art scene resonates this. Economically and politically speaking the UAE is like an island of gatherings. A platform to raise global dialogues. (I am curious to see what difference VAT will bring).
What would you like visitors to understand about your work?
It is difficult to say, as I like the notion of puzzles of some sort in my work. It is not always a direct statement. One looks for it only if one wants to. Or else the visual presented could be something entirely different from the purpose of its making. Which also I feel meets the purpose of the work.
