Artist, Winner of the Abraaj Group Art Prize 2017
When viewers walk around the installation, they experience the ever-changing reflections on the glass panels. The movement of natural light throughout the day, the only contingent element in the work, activates the composition and unites the whole piece.
My practice draws inspiration from both the vibrancy and chaos of urban landscapes like Dubai and the distilled repetition of geometric patterns, which abound in traditional Islamic art and architecture. The work stems from my interest in the interplay between light and colour, specifically how overlapping, transparent coloured planes interact and create a third layer of colour and geometry.
Winning the prize has allowed me to see the concept come to life at a much larger scale and make my last few years of research come together.
